A Study to Promote Shared Decision Making of Treatment Choices in Patients who have Advanced Kidney Disease

About this study

The purpose of this study is to develop educational materials that will help patients and clinicians talk about treatment options for patients with advanced kidney disease.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria

  • Seen for Chronic kidney disease 5 or End stage renal disease
  • Age > 55 years old 
  • Has mild cognitive impairment defined as a Montreal Cognitive Assessment score (MOCA) of  > 21 and < 26
  • Has a cognitively intact caregiver who is also willing to participate in the study

Exclusion Criteria

  • Has advanced dementia, MOCA < 21, or delirium as assessed by the validated Confusion Assessment Method
  • Any language barrier
